x = Independently Organized Event
TEDx ZazilHa came together through the effort of three local community activists/leaders and a group of volunteers who answered their call from all over Playa del Carmen: the nationals and the foreigners currently calling this gorgeous Caribbean city on the Mayan Riviera home.
Situated on a Caribbean coastline along the eastern face of the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is widely considered the fastest-growing city in Mexico and, possibly, all Latin America. In the past decade, it has transformed from a tourist resort town to a vibrant, multi-layered international community of professionals, artists, students, digital nomads, expats, activists and inventors from all over Mexico and all around the world.
This Year’s Theme: Sustainable Societies
With so many interesting, talented, worldly, curious and open-minded humans around, we knew a TEDx event would find a good home here, just as we did. The spirit of spreading ideas gives us hope for the future of our fascinating but turbulent world. For this reason, this year’s TEDx theme is Sustainable Societies.
In a multicultural hub of Playa del Carmen, many languages are spoken in many accents, but our common lingua franca is growth. Again and again, you will hear people who spent any time in this marvellous area talk about how it has impacted their lives for the better.
But, as Playa del Carmen allows so many of us to thrive, what can we do to give back, to benefit the community, to support this place and each other in it?
Cross-pollination of ideas is essential to our community for staying proactive about positive change. Holding TEDx talks in Playa del Carmen provides an opportunity to learn about social and scientific advances being made by experts and visionaries working on solving the world’s most pressing problems like social equality, the co-evolution of humanity and technology and the sustainability of life. By bringing TEDx to Playa del Carmen, we support unity and innovation and honor the cultural and natural wealth of this ancient land.
The first event, on January 13, 2022 will be held in English, in the spirit of bringing out an international audience.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; TED Translators, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established The Audacious Project that takes a collaborative approach to funding ideas with the potential to create change at thrilling scale; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
